Pre Award - Monthly

Our Pre-Award Services team will be hosting virtual office hours on the first Thursday of each month from 11:00 am – 12:00 pm. Please join us to ask any questions you may have related to pre-award and non-financial post-award issues (including but not limited to: searching for funding opportunities, applying for grants, determining eligibility, budget development, proposal preparation and submission, Just-In-Time submissions, award and subaward negotiation, prior approval requests, etc.).

Principles of Scientific Writing – Webinar, June 11, 2025

Hosted by Dr. Harry Shirley (Springer Nature Masterclasses) this interactive webinar focuses on strategies to enhance your academic writing. Learn how clear, concise, and thorough scientific writing can maximize your research’s impact and accessibility. Shifting Focus while Utilizing Expertise - Part 1: Diversifying funding your portfolio – Webinar, September 4, 2025

There have been many significant changes to the Federal funding landscape in recent months.  Grant programs through other sources such as corporations and foundations may be an additional resource for some areas of research and/or outreach.  This session will include information on identifying potential grantors, how to approach them, and best practices in applying.

Description: Congratulations are always in order when your project has been funded. But, as we all know, the notice of award is only the beginning. Avoiding Grant Spending Setbacks: Your Guide to Expense Allowability

Date: Tuesday, Oct. 22nd

Title: “Avoiding Grant Spending Setbacks: Your Guide to Expense Allowability”

Description: Researchers and department staff are invited to a 30-minute webinar covering the basics of expense allowability on sponsored projects (i.e., grant) funds. We will discuss tips for avoiding spending roadblocks including how to develop your proposal budget and what post-award looks for to determine allowability. Plus, you’ll have an opportunity to ask questions of our expert research administrators!

IRB Workshop

IRB Workshop

Based on researchers’ feedback on topics they would like to have more training on, the IRB will be holding several workshops in the months ahead. The first one will be held with a hybrid format on April 2, 2024, from 12 noon to 1:30 pm. The venue for in-person attendees will be the Argyros Forum (AF) 201. All attendees are encouraged to RSVP using this form. This will also enable inclusion in the Zoom meeting invite.

The content of the workshop will include:

  • Activities which do not require IRB approval
    • Considerations and guidelines student projects without IRB approval
  • Types of applications to the IRB: Exempt, expedited, full board review, request to rely on external IRB
  • Recruiting own students to participate in research
  • Handling audio and video data
  • Raffles as incentives for research participation

The NIH Data Management and Sharing Policy at 1 Year Workshop

Staff from multiple NIH ICOs (Institutes, Centers, and Offices) presented feedback based on analysis of the first year of Data Management and Sharing Plan (DMSP) submissions at a webinar discussing outcomes of experimental DMSP templates used by the Federal Demonstration Partnership. NIH staff spoke to DMSPs as a whole, not just ones generated through the experimental FDP templates.

Industry Alliances & Commercialization Inventions Workshop

Come join the Industry Alliances & Commercialization office for a workshop about inventions.  Learn more about what exactly is an invention and how to tell when you have one.  What to do when you have an invention (e.g. when are the best times to report your inventions?) and what is the university’s process in managing your invention?  The workshop will be approximately 1-hour long and will be delivered via Zoom.

FGRSC Proposal Workshop

Our office will be hosting an FGRSC workshop on Friday 2/16 from 12pm-1:30pm on Zoom. This workshop will give an overview of the FGRSC and will explain the application process along with some FAQs. All who are interested in applying are encouraged to attend. Registration for this workshop is required. Budget Workshop

Budget Workshop for Grant Proposals

The Research Grant Budget Workshop will provide investigators with a solid foundational understanding of common terminology used in grant proposal budgets as well as detailed information on how to develop a grant proposal budget and prepare a high quality budget justification. While the workshop is geared towards early stage investigators who are new to grant proposals, all are welcome to attend who may benefit from the information (such as graduate students, postdocs, other faculty, etc.). The 1-hour workshop will include a 10-minute Q&A after the presentation.
